Rum Runner Boulder Chili Cook Off Huge Success
Written by Gobi Moore on November 28, 2017
November 26, 2017 – Las Vegas, NV – It was a beautiful 80 degree day in Las Vegas, Sunday the 26th for the ‘Rum Runner Boulders, 7th Annual Chili Cook Off’ hosted by the tremendous supporters of local Veterans – Rum Runner at 6658 Boulder Hwy, Las Vegas, NV. In Honor of our local Veterans along with the Veterans Transition Resource Center, One Hero at a Time and Veterans Christian Ministry, the air was filled with spices, herbs and several types of meats as the contenders gathered early to set up tents, assorted cooking utensils and secret blends well hidden before adding to their crock pots, pans, with some as large as cauldrons.
The event began around 11:00 am with Judging taking place around 5:00 pm. The air was thick with aromas that tantalized your taste buds, while taking in some Sun and Football throughout the afternoon with anticipation of the sampling process. A Sunday worth bragging about, especially right after Thanksgiving. A great bunch of Vets, Families and Friends alike enjoyed the outing in unity while trying to out talk, out muscle and out wit each others special chili recipes.
We walked around from table to table, each garnished with it’s own sides of cheese, crackers, breads, olives and celery. Most of all, the chili with the proud Chefs hovering above greeting you with a big smile, hardy laugh and generous ladles full of colorful, glistening beans, veggies and meats. The styles varied from Coast to Coast, from savory to spicy, sweet to hot, allowing the libations to clear the pallet in between samplings from cup to bowl so you can enjoy every last spoonful.
Each contestant received generous tips for their efforts but garnering much more through the camaraderie, laughter and new friendships. Gift bags and 50/50 raffles provided by our gracious hosts at Rum Runner.
A big congratulations to all the winners, Skip and Sue took First Place, and our very own VET TALK Radio Super Duo, R.J. Dough for his 3rd place finish with his Anti-Isis Chili, All Pork Mustard Chili and Jim Lytner for taking home 2nd place winner.
To all who joined us, thank you for the memories, the great stories, the amazing chili and we hope to see you again real soon. Thanks again to the Veterans Transition Resource Center, One Hero at a Time, Veterans Christian Ministry and to Rum Runner Boulder Hwy, Las Vegas, NV – pop on by and tell them Gobi sent you!
